Challenges in Custom Stainless Steel Machining

Custom machining of stainless steel parts presents certain challenges due to the alloy's hardness, machinability, strength, and heat resistance falling between titanium and aluminum. Here are some challenges associated with machining custom stainless steel parts:

Overheating:
Unlike many other types of steel and metals, stainless steel is a poor heat conductor. However, working with stainless steel can lead to rapid overheating, causing damage to the stainless steel itself and the tools and CNC machinery used in the process.
Difficult Surface Finishing:
Selecting the appropriate surface finish for CNC machined stainless steel parts is particularly challenging. This is because, unlike other metals, the surface finish of stainless steel not only affects its aesthetics but also influences other qualities such as corrosion resistance, electrical performance, impact resistance, and weldability.
Technical Expertise:
Working with stainless steel requires technical skills and considerations. Machining stainless steel is tricky as using the wrong cutting tools or speeds can damage the material. This challenge makes stainless steel machining labor-intensive and slow.
Poor Machinability:
Compared to other metals, stainless steel is considerably more difficult to machine. Additionally, its hardening rate is too rapid, challenging to control, resulting in a lower grade of machinability. Therefore, specialized tools are required for machining stainless steel.
